What is botrytis?

Botrytis cinerea , also known as gray mold, is a very common and destructive fungal disease in crops such as hemp, as well as in gardens and orchards. This fungus thrives in high humidity and can cause significant losses if not controlled promptly.

  • Life cycle: Spores are present in the environment and germinate when they find humid conditions and weakened tissues.
  • Spread: It spreads rapidly by wind, water, or contaminated tools.

How does botrytis manifest itself?

  • Brown or gray spots: On leaves, stems, flowers and fruits, which spread rapidly.
  • Grayish mold: Appearance of a gray cottony layer in the infected areas.
  • Necrosis: The affected parts rot and the plant weakens.
  • Damaged flowers and fruit: In hemp, it reduces the quality and commercial value of the harvest.

Where does it appear and why?

  • High humidity: More than 50% humidity favors its development.
  • Moderate temperatures: Between 15 and 25 °C is its ideal range.
  • Weak or injured plants: Damaged tissues are more vulnerable.
  • Poor management: Excessive irrigation, poor ventilation, or accumulated plant debris.

Most affected areas:

  • Indoors: Greenhouses and protected crops with poor ventilation.
